Welcome to the SMA Science Department. This year SMA has added some new
members to our staff. Commander Doug Hewins remains with us as the
regular and AP Biology teacher. Captain Denise Erb is back again this
year to teach Marine Biology and Integrated Science, honors. New to our
staff are Captain Caitlyn Spinelli, Biology and Physics, Captain Rebecca
Schopfer, Environmental Science and Erath &Space Science, and Lt.
Colonel Christina Bowman, Earth & Space Science. I will be teaching
Chemistry and Integrated Science Honors.
With our expanded staff and science course selections we continue to
strive to prepare our cadets for college and to critically tackle life
with a strong scientific perspective. We also are working toward
preparing students to be successful on the 11th grade FCAT science test.
In the upcoming years the FCAT science test will count toward improving
our school grade and for graduation requirements. As in past years, we
will be competing in the Sarasota County Science Fair.
We have well appointed science labs that permit us to conduct various
hands-on lab activities while incorporting technology into our classes.
The science department places a strong emphasis on advancing higher
order thinking and analytical skills.
