SMA Rifle Team Competes in the US Army JROTC Postal and Continues Quest for a repeat to the

Sarasota County JROTC Air Rifle League Championship

The Sarasota Military Academy Rifle team continues the year of competitive marksmanship with postal matches.  On Saturday, November 7th, at the Sarasota Military Academy Air Rifle range, our team participated in the US Army JROTC Postal.  This is the match that we compete in to try to earn an invitation to the US Army Service Championships in February; this year in Anniston, Alabama.  Targets are sent to the Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) and scanned by the Orion scoring system which results in more accurate and impartial scoring.  Once targets are scored, they will be posted on the web at http://clubs.odcmp.com/cgi-bin/report_matchResult.cgi?matchID=5016.

Preliminary results from the postal proved promising for many of our cadets.  The following cadets had personal best scores: Josh Yoder (270), Hannah Walker (270), Tyler Lambert (246), Thomas Myers (237), Bart Wloka (207), Hannah Kenny (233), Jake Gibson (186), William Coleman (148), Chris Conlon (157).  Cade Kenny had a personal best for the year with a 273.

Although Seth Day did not have a personal best, he did have the high score for the Precision team with a 289.

The Sporter team’s preliminary score is 1014 and the Precision

Team’s score is 1101.  Both scores were down from last year, however, we have many more matches to resume our performance of excellence.

In addition to the match, our cadets also were competing for Marksmanship badges.  We had 11 cadets shoot Expert, 3 Sharpshooters and 5 Marksman.

Additionally, after our 3rd place finish in the Sarasota County JROTC Air Rifle league opening match at Sarasota HS, our team met the challenge in the second match, again held at Sarasota HS on October 30th

Our team, consisting of freshmen Steven Laporte (254), Alex Beggs (233), and Hana Kenny (213) all had personal best performances.  These, along with Thomas Myers (229) and freshman Patrick Gallagher (171) out-performed Sarasota, Riverview, Desoto, Venice and Northport High Schools to capture 1st place in the second match or 6 in the league.  Through this outstanding performance, the Eagles moved up in the standings to second place, one point behind Riverview.

We must stay focused and commit ourselves completely.

We are a team.  We succeed or fail as one!
