Welcome to the visual art department at SMA! Here we give the right side of the brain a work out and tap into the creativity we are all born with.
Art is not a magical ability. It can be taught. It is a skill that stays with us for a lifetime. Art courses give students improved perceptual abilities and widen their horizons aesthetically and culturally. Art helps develop a child's personality in a broader sense; in fact, art has been statistically shown to increase students scores on national tests such as the SAT.
At SMA we concentrate on fundamental skill building in art, initially. Students can feel free to use their new skills to create all the art they can imagine; however, while in class they will acquire a knowledge and grasp of the Elements and Principles of Art according to National and State educational standards established by professionals.
One added benefit is that their art teacher, Capt Lyon, is a professional artist and Ringling graduate who sets the expectation bar high and helps the students achieve it. We won't be making any cutesy little things in this class!
The students also learn studio practice and procedure along with materials and their application.
